Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPcelebrate
This weekend, the goal is to take photos and videos that celebrate the holiday season, as in this featured photo by Anna Salynskaya (@i_love_inspire). Here are some tips to get you started:
Whether you’re giving gifts, spending time out in nature or dancing the night away, capture moments that feel unique to this festive time of year.
December brings with it a slew of parties and family gatherings. Document an entire meal or soiree — challenge yourself to tell the story of an entire evening in a single frame.
Celebrations can be quiet and peaceful. Take a solitary moment to reflect on the past year and document it on camera.
PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPcelebrate hashtag only to photos and videos taken over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video taken over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.

Each Christmas, Russian photographer and cookbook author Olesya Kuprina (@okuprin) decks the halls — and her two cats, Gustav and August, in Christmas scenes with outfits and ornaments. “I started taking photos of the cats when Gustav was small,” she says. “He likes posing and knows he’ll get a treat for it, so he always waits patiently. When he was a year old, we got a Christmas tree and he really liked it. He could hide underneath it, chew it and there were lots of interesting decorations. It became his favorite part of the house.” Gustav takes after Olesya in that way. “Christmas is my favorite holiday,” she says. “I really like anticipating and preparing for it, getting a tree and putting presents under it. I love it when it’s snowing outside and we’re making hot chocolate and sitting around in funny Christmas sweaters. Now I can’t imagine the holiday without my family — me, my boyfriend and the two cats.” Celebrate Christmas with Olesya, Gustav and August right now on our story. 🎄

Hello, world! It’s time for a very special edition of #WeeklyFluff, starring 10-month-old Cricket (@cricketinthethicket). This sassy shiba inu resides in Alaska — which is exactly where he belongs, according to his human Gabrielle. “Cricket really likes it when we do our glacier hikes; he’s a notorious glacier-licker,” says Gabrielle. “He loves the sticks that he finds out there. He’ll carry them around proudly, even if they’re much too big, and drag them behind. That makes him really happy.” Head on an Alaskan adventure with @cricketinthethicket now on our Instagram story. ⛄️🐾

Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPspontaneous
This weekend, the goal is to take photos and videos that capture unexpected moments filled with energy and excitement, as in this featured photo from Noel Besuzzi (@imoments). Here are some tips to get you started:
Find humor in spontaneity, from a bird snatching someone’s midday snack to a friend pretending to skate along an icy street.
Join in on the fun! Dance at a party, run in a race, help your family cook a meal — some of the most spontaneous moments come from when you’re in on the action.
Sit back and observe your neighbors, co-workers and loved ones around you. People make dozens of spur-of-the-moment decisions every day — see if you can manage to catch one of them on camera.
PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPspontaneous hashtag only to photos and videos taken over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video taken over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.

By leaving the camera shutter open for 30 seconds, Kajeh Mehrizi (@kajeh) was able to create this long-exposure light painting with a flashlight and some spur-of-the-moment creativity. “Light painting is very experimental,” he says. “I don’t know what the final result will look like, but the thrill of seeing it is very satisfying.” #WHPspontaneous

RIU (@mr_riu) prefers to express himself in black and white. “The way I work, I do not use any colored paper, any coloring or any glue. I think it’s about simplicity and cleanliness,” says the artist from Japan who creates complex patterns out of a single sheet of paper.
Depending on the piece, it can take more than 30 hours before RIU completes production. But despite the tiring nature of his work, which requires a lot of concentration, according to RIU, it is precisely this concentrated feeling of fatigue that leads to the feeling of accomplishment that follows. “I hope that I can help people find strength in their lives,” he says.
Watch today’s story to see more of his intricate paper art.

High noon provided the perfect shadows for Julie Millasseau (@jul_mls) to capture this drone shot of a group of camels in Dubai. “What I like the most from this perspective is the illusion,” says Julie. “What you see at first is not the camel but it’s shadow. Nature is not always accessible in Dubai; drone photography gave me this very difficult, unique and specific angle and I love it.”

A white cat on the streets of Brittany, France, played peekaboo with photographer Gaëlle Simon (@trespetiteshistoiresdamour) until she captured the perfect frame. “I think he is representing winter and the new year in a perfect way: the magic of the beginnings, when all is quiet and empty but full of hope, the white empty page,” she says.

A diver takes flight before splashing into an ocean water swimming pool in Cape Town, South Africa. “His pose makes me think of something a ballerina would have to do a couple of takes to get right,” says Barry Christianson (@thesestreetsza), a web developer who spent a day photographing the steady queue of divers at the public pools. “It’s clear that he put all his energy into that jump — so much that it looks like he is flying.” #TheWeekOnInstagram

Actress and singer Laura Marano (@lauramarano) was 5 years old when she began acting professionally. “My mom owns a children’s theater, and my sister and I were always there,” says Laura, who was born, raised and still lives in Los Angeles. “I was always performing and taking voice and piano lessons because I loved it so much — and I was also kind of a ham.”
Fast forward to this Golden Globes (@goldenglobes) weekend, and Laura is proud and excited to be co-hosting the red carpet before the awards show — and to have starred in a nominated film, “Lady Bird.” “I can’t believe I got to be a part of a movie that was nominated for a few Golden Globes,” she says. “To be honest, one of my bucket list goals was always going to the Golden Globes, and the fact that I’m getting to accomplish that this weekend has me completely flipping out.”

Christian Rodríguez (@christian_foto) is seeing the world differently. The photojournalist from Uruguay has eyes in the sky, with a drone-mounted camera, and his young son strapped to his back. “You can see the magnitude of the landscape,” he says, describing the perspective his aerial camera gave him while on a recent trip to Ushuaia, located at the southernmost tip of Argentina. “This region has rivers, peat bogs, melting glaciers and rich flora and fauna,” he adds. “In the end, a drone is a great tool, but the most important thing is the story behind the image.”
For Christian, his most important story now is his relationship with his son, Salvador, who, at 16 months of age, is already growing up as an explorer. “I don’t want to be an absent father,” says Christian. “I want to give him beautiful memories.”

Twenty-four-year-old Jasmine Tan (@stylohotmilo) is a Singaporean design researcher and self-described foodie. “I love our multiracial demographic because that means there’s always so much to observe, listen and appreciate from the people and spaces around me,” she says. “And of course, we get such a crazy variety of food.”
Jasmine always loved going out to eat — Korean kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew), Japanese ramen and Singapore’s bak kut teh (pork rib soup) are some of her favorites — but she started cooking at home out of necessity. “My house is located in the extreme west of Singapore so I don’t get a lot of food choices, and as a foodie that really annoyed me,” she explains. She’s taken on lots of recipes in her kitchen, but still loves heading out for special meals. “Living in Singapore means that there’s always more food and more experiences waiting for you as long as you’re ready to try!”
On our story, Jasmine is taking us on a Singapore food tour. Tune in to check it out.
